Surfboat rowing has been going since 2005 at Mordialloc. From humble beginnings of a junior girls crew going out into the surf at Fairhaven as our baptism of fire, to producing state representative crews, national and world medallist crews, it’s fair to say we have come a long way in the past 10 or so years.
Surfboat rowing is arguably the most team orientated sport in the world. Everyone needs to be switched on including the sweep/coach. Battling against mother nature, as well as other crews in a race, you get a sense of accomplishment, competition, a great workout and an adrenaline rush that is second to none as you charge down a wave.
At Mordialloc, we have a wide range of crews starting from U19 all the way up to the masters crews in both men and women. Therefore, we have a great variety of skill and experience, in rowers and sweeps, that will suit any new member. First and foremost, you are providing a valuable service to the community as a lifesaver, whilst enjoying the benefits of being a Mordialloc Life Saving Club member.
Our crews start their fitness training in mid June to build a good aerobic base for the season whilst hitting the surf for wave sessions where possible. Towards August/September they start getting wet on a more regular basis working towards up to 6 sessions a week at the peak of summer, some crews getting on the water before 5am. The competition season ends with “The Aussies” in April with beach patrols finishing on Easter. All rowers will tell you that it is all worth it!
Our crews have the pleasure of competing at many beautiful beaches in not only Victoria, but all around Australia. The camaraderie of our crews grows as we all pitch in to help each other where need be.
