Lifesaving is a learned skill for which training is conducted by volunteer trainers and coaches. Beach patrol qualifications can be attained from the age of thirteen and are nationally recognised awards. The Lifesaving Bronze is the core patrolling qualification for active lifesavers and is the equivalent to the Surf Life Saving Australia Bronze Medallion. To be eligible to gain this award, individuals must be over fifteen years of age and able to swim 400 metres in a swimming pool in less than 9 minutes. The Surf Rescue Certificate/Lifesaving Star, for members over the age of thirteen, requires that individuals are able to swim 200m in a swimming pool in less than 5 minutes. Once the Lifesaving Bronze has been obtained, there are many other areas in which to gain further knowledge. There are awards to be gained in the areas of advanced resuscitation, rescue boat driving, first aid, radio operation, training and examination. This variety of higher awards allows diversity in skills and experience across patrols with a patrol member’s function varying according to their qualifications. The training required for these awards is conducted under the direction of the Life Saving Operation Coordinator. For information on these email Michael m_barbarino@mlsc.com.au |
