Beach Competition
Beach Competitions are held during the summer months from December through to March. Junior Carnivals are generally held on weekends during this period. Competition is open to U7 – U14 competitors. Competitors must be 6 years of age or older to be eligible to compete.
Nipper competition is similar to the events that the senior life savers participate in. Nipper carnivals provide an opportunity for the children to use the skills they learn in a competitive yet fun environment. Events in which the nippers participate include:
• Beach Flags
• Beach Sprints
• Beach Relay
• Run and Wade
• Nipper Board Race
A number of nipper carnivals are run throughout the season at various beaches around Victoria, concluding with the Junior State Championships.
Prior to competing in water events nippers must complete a test of swimming ability and water safety knowledge known as the S Badge. The requirements of this test vary depending on the individual’s age. Those who successfully complete this test receive an S Badge which is sewn onto the front hip of the bathers. The S Badge is a prerequisite for any nipper wishing to compete in swimming or board paddling events at carnivals. It is not required for those nippers wishing only to complete in land based events. The S Badge is renewed each year at the beginning of the season.
